Technical training high performance rotary cutting dies at DS Smith Grenaa
Andrew Powell, Technical Sales Manager of PolyMX, had the privilege of giving a training at the DS Smith site Grenaa. The goal of this training was to give the attendees detailed information about Rotary Diecutting. The training gave insight on how Rotary dies are made and what pitfalls you can come across.
The following topics were addressed:
- Structural Design (and it’s limitations)
- Manufacturing of a Rotary Die
- Choice of materials such as shells and rotary rules
- SRP & RRP Perforation Rules
- Ejection Materials
Andrew and the attendees also took a look at the effects of poor maintenance. To achieve great results on a rotary diecutter the machine has to be in perfect working order. If not, this has influence on the lifespan of the machine and it’s auxillary components. What people forget is that maintenance also has a great influence on the dimensional stability of a product.

ANDREW POWELL STRENGTHENS POLYMX AS INTERNATIONAL SALES MANAGER
The success of PolyMX is based on the unmatched quality of our products, combined with the knowledge and skills of our team. With great pride we would like to announce the arrival of Andrew Powell. He is an expert in high performance cutting dies and will strengthen our team as International Sales Manager. In this role he will be responsible for our existing partners and for the growth of our global customer portfolio.
Andrew has known PolyMX since the first introduction of Polytop MX® into the market. He knows like no other what PolyMX stands for, and he may already be known to some of you. After finishing his education he started running converting machines at Smurfit Kappa. Therefore he knows what challenges there are in the workplace. Starting as an apprentice he worked himself up to become a Senior Operator, ultimately leaving to work for the cutting die manufacturer DieVision. Here he grew from being a Technical Specialist to a Product Manager because of his ability to apply his technical knowledge, to the challenges customers bestowed upon him. As from now he supports the PolyMX team in future growth and service to existing customers and end users of high performance dies.
“PolyMX is an amazing and beautiful company. You cannot but notice the passion and service for this product and combined with the togetherness within the company, this made me feel at home immediately. It is a very pleasant work environment and I am looking forward to developing even better products and services together with our team and customers”, says Andrew Powell.
Melissa Monster-van Golverdingen, Managing Director of PolyMX: “I have known Andrew for quite some time and I am impressed by his knowledge and his work ethic. Andrew is very customer driven and will apply 100% to get things done for customers. This fits within our corporate culture. Andrew can relate to customers needs and will go to work on finding a solution to their problem. We often receive requests if we can help improve the efficiency of the die cut process and the quality of the die cut product. This exceeds just providing a good rubber advice. Th rough his knowledge of production on die presses and the manufacturing of high performance cutting dies, Andrew is the perfect person to answer these questions. He does not only know the driving forces of Polytop MX®, but also that of cutting dies. We believe in this approach and we are obliged to provide support services to our partners concerning this matter.
More and more companies in the packaging industry are switching to the use of recycled cardboard to make their production process more sustainable. However, existing ejection materials are often too hard for these easily damaged paper types, so the desired quality is not achieved. After two years’ development work, PolyMX is the first player on the market to succeed in producing a far softer ejection material. This softness means the user can supply topflight products, irrespective of the cardboard type.
Shore A10 is suitable for both rotary and flatbed dies and is available in heights of between 7 and 16 mm. This solution will enable packaging companies to supply top-quality products while still satisfying all the recycling requirements and sustainability goals.
The biggest advantage of the softer material is the reduction of cracking along the inside lines. In addition, even with this Polytop MX® variant, the lower hardness of the ejection material does not mean a shorter useful life; it is just as long-lasting as the harder material variants. Furthermore, the lighter weight means a saving on transport costs.
Melissa Monster-van Golverdingen, director of PolyMX explained, “We are extremely proud of the result. After two years of research work, we have succeeded in developing a material that will enable our users to deliver perfectly finished products to their customers. We always aim to help our users achieve their goals; one of the ways we do this is by constantly coming up with ground-breaking products and services. Shore A10 is our latest contribution, and initial reactions from the market have been extremely positive.”
